Indianapolis teen faces drug charges following traffic stop

| Aug 16, 2017 | Drug Crimes |

Due to the dangers associated with most controlled substances, being charged with a drug crime can be a serious situation for those accused. Depending on the details of the crime, these charges could carry serious penalties, damaging the accused’s personal and professional reputation. Thus, it is important that defendants understand that they may have the ability to take an aggressive approach against drug charges.

According to recent reports, an Indianapolis teen was arrested for drug related charges in Hancock County. Based on preliminary reports, the 18-year-old female was arrested on suspicion of drug crimes following a traffic stop. Police officers in McCordsville claim that they stopped the teen for failing to use a turn signal while she was changing lanes.

During the traffic stop, authorities assert that they smelled marijuana. This resulted in a search. This search reportedly resulted in authorities finding both drugs and drug paraphernalia in the car and in her pockets. Allegedly, police officers uncovered small bags containing heroin, amphetamine and methamphetamine. Additionally, a police report suggests that authorities also found a grinder and a digital scale, presumably used to weigh drug before selling them.

Police said that in total, 35 small plastic bags were located in the pockets of the suspect, each with a dollar sign printed on it. Police believe this is used for the packaging and selling of these controlled substances. This incident resulted in the young woman facing 10 criminal counts, which include dealing a narcotic drug, possession of a narcotic drug, dealing a schedule II controlled substance and maintaining a common nuisance. All of these charges are felonies.

Facing felony drug charges is a very serious situation and should be treated as such. Those accused of such crimes should understand what rights are afforded to them and how they could initiate a defense against the charges they face. Whether that means challenging evidence or asserting an unlawful search and seizure, it is important to understand what defense strategies could work.
