Ten people indicted on drug trafficking charges in Indiana

On Behalf of | Aug 30, 2017 | Drug Crimes |

Drug dealers in Indianapolis and other cities seldom work alone. Dealers who sell drugs on the street usually obtain them from persons who bring the drugs into a city or neighborhood. The drugs probably crossed state and international borders before they arrive at their destination.

This type of network may be at the heart of indictments recently announced by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. According to the announcement, 10 persons were indicted for various drug crimes allegedly committed during the operation of a local drug ring. The announcement claimed that the indictment dismantled a ring of drug dealers who sold methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin throughout Indianapolis.

According to the indictment, the alleged leader of the ring brought the drugs to Indianapolis from other sources. He and an alleged co-defendant then distributed the drugs to street dealers. These alleged dealers sold the drugs on the street and turned over the proceeds to the two leaders of the ring. Investigators allegedly recovered more than 66 pounds of methamphetamine and six pounds of cocaine in the apartment shared by the two alleged co-leaders. Police also say that they seized heroin, fentanyl and marijuana, $50,000 in cash and 17 firearms, some of which were said to be assault-type weapons.

The indictments named the two alleged leaders of the ring and eight others, seven of whom resided in Indianapolis. According to the Assistant United States Attorney who will prosecute the cases, the defendants could each receive life sentences if they are convicted. Anyone facing similar charges may benefit from consulting an experienced criminal defense attorney about potential defenses and the chances of obtaining a favorable plea agreement.
